The tragedies of Croatia, Bosnia, Herzegovina, Serbia; Northern Ireland, Palestine, Israel, Iraq, etc., can be ended with one of three actions. 1. Acknowledge that there is no supernatural source for our existence, purpose for being, or cause of action, and that we are beings that behave as one would expect from an animal with our evolutionary heritage. 2. Eliminate religious bigotry. 3. Separate Church from State - whenever one religion dominates a government, it invariably exercises the force of government to physically, economically or spiritually convert, dominate, expel or exterminate those who do not share their mythology. Action 1 is most unlikely, because discomfort with the unknown leads to the invention of myth, or the acceptance of myth by those seeking to control the uncomfortable. Few are ever fully secure with the unknown. Action 2 is more likely. Ignorance and fear die with knowledge, but the inferiority that is the source of bigotry inhibits the education. Inferiority is difficult to unlearn. Action 3 is the most likely achievable. By limiting government to the protection of person and property which necessarily includes the freedoms to contract and associate, among others, no one group can dominate another. Where this is the case, peace and prosperity prevail. I urge you to support the National League for the Separation of Church and State, Americans United for Separation of Church and State, and The Americans For religious Freedom in this endeavor.
